Yoreganics Laundry Trio Sampler & Lip Balm Review & Giveaway (***CLOSED***)

8:40 PM Posted by Mommy Is Green

Do you ever think about why so many chemicals are added to products? I do. I often think about how things started simple and natural. I ponder times when items didn't have to be labeled organic because they just were organic. One area I find it difficult to find organic products for is laundry. I didn't think it was possible to get a USDA certified organic product to wash my clothes with but then I found out about Yoreganics Soap Nuts.

From Yoreganics.com:

SOAP NUTS fall from the Soapberry tree (Sapindus mukorossi) found in Northern India and Nepal. The outer shells of these dried fruit berries contain saponin, which creates soap when agitated in water. They effectively clean, soften and remove odors from your laundry!

SOAP NUTS ARE:

— Eco-Friendly: sustainable and biodegradable

— Economical: less expensive than other detergents

— Antimicrobial & Antifungal: super for grey water & septic systems

— USDA Certified Organic - no nasty chemicals

PERFECT FOR:

— Sensitive skin - allergies, eczema & psoriasis

— Stinky odors - cloth diapers & sweaty workout clothes

Delicates - silks & wool

— Top & Front loading (High Efficiency) machines

I know washing your laundry in soap nuts sounds like a crazy idea, right? That's what I thought too when I first found out about them a few months ago. It's not something I jumped on right away. Then the more I thought about it the more I really wanted to try them. When I received the opportunity to try the Yoreganics Laundry Trio Sampler & Lip Balm (shown above) I was so excited! The Laundry Trio Sampler includes: Soap Nuts, Stain Remover, Brightens & Whitens.

When I put the Soap Nuts in with my laundry I was wondering how it would come out smelling. Soap nuts are described as having a mild vinegar scent so I wasn't sure what the end result would be. When I used the soap nuts alone, my clothes had a vinegar scent while they were still wet coming directly from the washing machine. But by the time my clothes came out of the dryer they just smelled clean. There's no fragrance like with toxic detergents but there is a crisp clean smell. If you prefer more scented laundry you can always throw a white/natural colored cloth with a few drops of essential oils into the dryer with your clothes. I didn't feel the need to do so but if you're
looking for more scent it's an option.

If you're feeling skeptical I would suggest doing the "shake test" before adding the soap nuts to your wash. For the shake test you put a couple of the soap nuts in a jar with water and shake. You will see the suds they create. This is also another way to check if the soap nuts are still good for another load. They are usually good for 4-6 loads depending on the water temperature you use or if you have soft or hard water. I was able to get the full 6 loads.

For my towels I added Brightens & Whitens to the load as a laundry enhancer.
It's non-toxic, biodegradable and does not contain any chlorine, phosphates, fragrances, or enzymes. The reason I tried this on my towels is because towels often sit around a a bit before being washed and can get stinky. Brightens & Whitens removes smells as well as stains. Well...my towels came out great! They smelled very fresh. I also used the Brightens & Whitens to soak my son's shirt and socks. They were much whiter than before. I was very pleased with that.

I used the Stain Remover (made with USDA organic ingredients) primarily for pizza/spaghetti sauce stains. That seems to be the stain problem that happens the most often in our household. We went out for pizza one day and my son grabbed my sweater. His hand had pizza sauce on it so I took the Yoreganics stain remover from my purse and sprayed my sweater right away. I gave it a few minutes then rubbed the stain. The pizza sauce was gone before my sweater even made it to the washer. Then one night my son somehow got spaghetti sauce on his white undershirt. I used the stain remover but I waited a little while so only some of the stain came out. No worries though because I used the Brightens & Whitens to get out the rest of the stain. The stain remover definitely works but it's best to use the stain remover as soon as possible.

Besides laundry products, Yoreganics also offers body products such as lip balm, facial bars, and foaming soap. I was able to try their Simplemint Lip Balm. I was thrilled that it is USDA certified organic because that's my preference when it comes to lip balm. When I have a choice that's what I will pick every time. The lip balm contains organic peppermint and spearmint essential oils. It had been so long since I used a mint lip balm so it was very refreshing to use. It provides good moisture and I don't have to reapply too many times during the day.

So here's the big question...will I be using soap nuts again? Absolutely! I love this trio and I'm a true believer in Yoreganics.

I would use the soap nuts to do my laundry. It would be great to have something completely unscented, and I've heard that soap nuts work well with high-efficiency washing machines.
