EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database

1:56 PM Posted by Mommy Is Green

Now that I have been switching over to organic products I have been using Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database as a steady reference. I like to see what is available in a low (0-2) hazard rating. Since there is not a lot of choice for organics in my area I try to stick to a rating of 3 or under. In a perfect world I could get cosmetics all rated zero. But unfortunately, that is not always an easy task. Plus, not all products work well for everyone. You have to find the items that best complement you.

As far as the ratings go, you should still read ingredient labels on products. Even if a product states it's organic it may still contain harmful chemicals. Sometimes I use products that are not listed on the database. That's when you especially need to pay attention to the ingredients listed on the products. Just to name some, I always stay away from parabens, phthalates (often listed as "fragrance"), SLS/SLES, 1,4-Dioxane, petrolatum, and any synthetic colors or fragrances.

Also remember that "natural" doesn't necessarily mean organic. The word natural is not highly regulated and many cosmetic companies misuse the word organic as well. Your best choice is purchase items certified USDA Organic when possible.

If you are looking for cosmetic products that use USDA Certified Organic ingredients here's a helpful list:

Happy hunting!

Victoria, Thanks so much for spreading the word about EWG's Skin Deep database. Glad you find it useful. We have a Facebook page where we share and discuss our work on toxics and human health, including consumer tips on less-toxic living. It's here if that seems interesting: http://bit.ly/PberZ. Thanks for the link! My husband has super sensitive skin, and we have to be very careful with what we both use to keep him happy and rash-free :)
